Lolita's Personality

Despite their adorable nature, these birds are very loud and can be a distraction for those living near. They can be heard making ear-splitting screeches and loud calls which can be annoying to those who live in apartments or condos.

This species is also monomorphic. Males and females are difficult to differentiate. Due to this, the only way to reliably identify sex is through DNA testing. Once sex is known pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding may begin.

Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets, require training to learn commands and phrases. It is not an easy process, and it is essential that the pet's owner has patience and understands that this isn't something to be undertaken lightly. Lolita's care

For a long time activists have been lobbying for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the return of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists believed that Lolita would have a similar fate. However, she was never given the chance to return to the sea.

The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, overexerting her with head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and weakening her immune system. They also place her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.

In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, pledged to come up with an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her to eventually open water. The plan would have included a facility located on the west coast of Washington in which she could reside for the rest of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the actual ocean, not a concrete tank.

If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals who bond with their families until they die. Lolita who has been in a solitary space at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is being released into the wild. Many activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have demanded her departure from Seaquarium's stage and her eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

After years of public pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary on the ocean, where she can go swimming in the deep sea, perhaps even being reunited with her mother orca. Sadly the plans came too late for the beloved whale who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney issue.
